Betty Adamson (1917-2000) epitomized the spirit of independence of mind. During her early life she lived in Malvern, Worcestershire, England where she farmed chickens and grew vegetables. After her husband passed away, she spent the rest of her life in Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex, England with her extraordinary dogs and a remarkable parrot. She took a life-long interest in astronomy and travel and particularly relished stories of adventure that had within them a roguish sense of independence and involved youth.

The Betty Adamson Expedition Award will be administered in arbitrary years to an expedition linking Earth and space exploration that demonstrates a sense of adventure slightly out of the ordinary and that demonstrates a willingness to pursue an objective whose outcome is not certain.
