Cosmonauts on the Mir space station study the effects of microgravity on miniature, self-contained biospheres to help us understand how the Earth's biosphere works. In Mexico, a caving expedition studies human performance in extreme environments to improve astronaut selection. In the Sudan an expedition uses remote sensing from satellites to study savannah flood plains to improve the productivity of rice crops. In Antarctica researchers study microorganisms in ice and snow to try and understand possible habitats for life in cold extraterrestrial environments. This is a sampling of the exploration and scientific work the Foundation has helped to fund. Since its establishment in 1994, the Foundation has helped support over 50 projects around the world. The Earth and Space Awards are given expeditions that have helped deepen the mutually beneficial connections between environmentalism and the exploration of space. The Foundation currently offers five Earth and Space Awards each year to expeditions that further the vision of "the Earth as an Oasis cared for by a space-faring civilization". As well as the Earth and Space Awards the Foundation is establishing a series of separately administered awards. They are listed below. They are administered to expeditions based on applications for the annual awards, and are awarded to expeditions that fulfil the Foundation's vision. USING SPACE TO HELP MAINTAIN THE EARTH AS AN OASIS Environmental projects using technologies resulting from space exploration. Includes the novel use of satellite communications, GPS, remote sensing, advanced materials and power sources. Use of data from extraterrestrial expeditions to help further our understanding of the Earth’s environments and the biosphere. Includes samples and data returned from missions in Earth orbit and beyond. Effects of the space environment and space exploration on the Earth. Includes expeditions studying impact craters, environmental surveys of launch complexes, approved meteorite collection expeditions. USING THE EARTH TO HELP UNDERSTAND OTHER WORLDS AND TO CREATE A SPACE-FARING CIVILIZATION Astro- and exobiology related fieldwork. Includes field research in Earth's extreme environments that assist in the search for life off the Earth and the study of the survival of life in extreme environments. Field research applying the Earth's environmental and biological resources toward the human exploration and settlement of space. Includes the use of extraterrestrial ‘analog’ environments on Earth to test space technologies and human physiological and psychological studies in extreme environments. Astronomy at the interface between Earth and space exploration / astroarchaeology. Includes expeditions making astronomical observations from remote, difficult to access, Earth locations, archaeological field projects studying the development of early civilizations that made significant contributions to astronomy and space sciences, field expeditions studying the way in which views of the astronomical environment shaped the nature of past civilizations. FOSTERING APPRECIATION OF THE LINKS BETWEEN ENVIRONMENTALISM AND SPACE EXPLORATION
Educational fieldtrips and projects that improve public understanding of the links between environmentalism and space exploration.
Application Procedure for Earth and Space Awards To save time, please follow the simple instructions below: Expeditions can apply by submitting a description of the project by e-mail. The Foundation requests all submissions electronically. The application should NOT exceed one side of A4/letter and can be submitted as a Word or PDF document. The deadline for applications is APRIL 30th. There is one funding round per year. Most expeditions are eligible. They include university expeditions and other expeditions from private or non-profit organizations and government expeditions. Awards are currently the equivalent of £250 or $500 each. Please ensure that the following is included in the one page application submitted: - The relevance to the Foundation's objectives - The location and duration of the project - Other supporting institutions - The proposed scientific/education objectives and methods of dissemination of this information - A brief list of team members and their qualifications - The account name to which the cheque should be made payable if the application is successful - A full mailing address and email address |

Foundation funds expeditions that either use Earth's resources and
environments to help us understand other worlds and assist in the
exploration of space or expeditions that use space technology and data to
help us understand and care for the Earth's environment. Typical
